Dr. Ricardo Rafael Correa Márquez is a physician-scientist, educator, and leader in endocrinology, medical education, and health equity. He currently serves as Program Director of the Endocrinology, Diabetes, and Metabolism Fellowship and Director of Health Equity and Inclusive Initiatives at the Cleveland Clinic’s Endocrinology and Metabolism Institute, where he also practices as a staff endocrinologist. He holds academic appointments as Clinical Professor of Medicine at the Lerner College of Medicine, Adjunct Professor of Medicine at the Ohio Heritage School of Medicine, and serves as Director of Mentoring and Belonging and Director of Longitudinal Didactics for undergraduate and graduate medical education .
Dr. Correa earned his MD and EdD from the University of Panama, followed by residency training in Internal Medicine at the University of Miami–Jackson Memorial Hospital, where he was recognized with multiple awards for research and clinical excellence. He completed a fellowship in Endocrinology, Diabetes, and Metabolism at the National Institutes of Health (NIH), with advanced research training in adrenal and neuroendocrinology, rare endocrine genetic conditions, and translational drug development. His work at the NIH included early-phase clinical trials on novel therapies for autoimmune endocrine diseases. He also trained in tropical diseases and epidemiology at the Gorgas Memorial Institute and pursued advanced training in clinical epidemiology under Dr. Gordon Guyatt at McMaster University .
As a clinician-investigator, Dr. Correa has led pioneering projects in obesity, diabetes, Cushing syndrome, hypoparathyroidism, and transgender health. He has served as principal investigator on federally and industry-funded studies, including research on adrenal incidentalomas, vaccination in diabetes, and the cardiovascular and cancer outcomes of hormone-affirming therapies in transgender populations . His scholarly output includes over 200 peer-reviewed publications, book chapters, and clinical guidelines, and he serves on editorial boards of high-impact journals such as Endocrine Practice, Journal of Investigative Medicine, and Clinical Thyroidology.
Beyond research, Dr. Correa is nationally recognized for his leadership in medical education and health equity. He has served on the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education (ACGME), National Board of Medical Examiners (NBME), and American Board of Medical Specialties (ABMS), contributing to milestone development, assessment, and educational policy. His passion for mentoring underrepresented trainees has been reflected in his roles with the Latino Medical Student Association (LMSA), Student National Medical Association (SNMA), and multiple DEI task forces. He is also a board member of ElevateMed and The Pathway Initiative, organizations advancing diversity in medicine .
Dr. Correa’s contributions have earned him national and international recognition, including being named among Medscape’s 25 Rising Stars in Medicine, CellPress’s Top 100 Inspiring Hispanic Scientists in America, the Herbert W. Nickens Award from the Society of General Internal Medicine, and numerous teaching, mentorship, and leadership awards from the American College of Physicians, Endocrine Society, and American Association of Clinical Endocrinology .
He is board-certified in Medical Quality. He is the author of the book titled “Case report: basics and publication.” and senior Co-Editor of the book “Endocrinology of Aging.” His research focuses on neuroendocrinology, mainly on pituitary and adrenal tumor and health care disparities in diabetes in Latinx populations. He is dedicated to the community and helps as the co-medical director for an underserved clinic in Phoenix, where he created the endo and diabetes clinic. He also helped screen asylum patients as part of his volunteer work with the 100 Angels group, and he gives lectures and mentors many underrepresented minorities to become part of medicine. Due to his career, Dr. Correa has been awarded several recognitions, including Presidential Leadership scholar, 100 Hispanic Inspiring Scientist, Medscape Rising Start, N.M.Q.F. 40 under 40, Humanitarian award by Arizona Medical Association AACE Endocrinology Rising Star and many other prestigious national awards.
